Experience an unforgettable diving safari through one of the Egyptian Red Sea’s most remote and spectacular diving regions.
The Deep South St. John’s route takes you far from the busy northern dive sites to a world of pristine coral reefs, dramatic walls, caves, tunnels, pinnacles and extraordinary marine life.
At the heart of the journey lies the legendary St. John’s reef system, a vast collection of remote bank reefs offering an incredible variety of underwater landscapes.
Along the way, the safari also explores Fury Shoals and the offshore reefs of the Marsa Alam region, combining several distinctive diving areas into one exceptional Red Sea adventure.
The Heart of the Deep South
St. John’s is not a single reef. Instead, it is a vast system of remote bank reefs spread across Egypt’s Deep South.
The region consists of around ten bank reefs spread approximately 29 kilometres from east to west, creating an extraordinary variety of diving environments.
One dive may take you along a dramatic vertical wall disappearing into the deep blue. The next may lead between colourful coral pinnacles, caves and tunnels, while another opens onto an impressive garden of hard coral over white sand.
Its remote location, spectacular underwater topography and rich marine ecosystem make St. John’s one of the highlights of diving in the southern Egyptian Red Sea.
A Maze of Coral Reefs & Swim-Throughs
Fury Shoals adds another dimension to the Deep South adventure with spectacular coral formations, reef systems and natural swim-throughs.
Explore beautiful hard coral gardens, colourful pinnacles and fascinating underwater passages shaped by the reef.
The diversity of the area makes every dive different, from relaxed coral-garden dives to exciting explorations through reef formations and swim-throughs.
The Gateway to Egypt’s Deep South
The route also passes through the offshore reefs of the Marsa Alam region, adding even more variety to the safari.
These remote reefs combine coral gardens, walls and open-water environments, with opportunities to encounter the diverse marine life for which the southern Red Sea is famous.
Together, Marsa Alam, Fury Shoals and St. John’s create a journey through three distinctive diving regions during a single safari.
Discover a Different Side of the Red Sea
One of the defining features of the St. John’s region is its extraordinary underwater landscape.
Massive coral formations create caves, passages, tunnels and swim-throughs, while isolated pinnacles rise dramatically from the seabed.
Sunlight entering through openings in the reef can create spectacular underwater scenery, making this region particularly attractive to underwater photographers and divers who enjoy exploring complex reef formations.
From Colourful Reefs to the Open Blue
The Deep South is known for healthy coral ecosystems supporting a wide variety of Red Sea marine life.
Divers can encounter colourful reef fish, large schools of fish and other species associated with the southern Red Sea.
The offshore nature of many sites also means there may be opportunities for encounters with sharks and other pelagic marine life, although wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed.
