Gordon Reef is the first site you’ll encounter as you head toward Tiran, and it’s a favourite among Blue Horizon Red Sea divers. The reef is well known for the remains of the Louilla, a Panamanian cargo ship that ran aground in 1981. Although the wreck has mostly disappeared over time, it still adds a touch of history to the dive.
The southern side of the reef features a broad plateau between 10–25 metres, offering a relaxed and scenic start to the dive. When heading north, you’ll pass scattered metal barrels that often shelter octopus, stonefish, and the unique white-peppered moray—you never know what you’ll spot.
Depending on sea conditions, the route may turn here or continue around the corner. Keep an eye out for the rare Red Sea flasher wrasse, sometimes seen in this area. As you move to shallower depths, a sandy patch appears, home to graceful garden eels swaying in the current.
On calmer days, the dive can begin southward toward a shallow depression known as the “Amphitheatre” or “Shark Pool.” This spot is known for exciting encounters with sharks, schools of barracuda, tuna, jackfish, and a vibrant group of bannerfish. You’ll also find impressive fan corals around 22–25 metres.
As you ascend along the right bank, currents may intensify—simply stay close to the reef for shelter. Near the end of the dive, you’ll come across a pile of metal cables surrounded by plenty of marine life, a great finale before your ascent
