Thomas Reef is the smallest of the four reefs in the Tiran Strait, yet it is one of the most iconic sites among technical divers thanks to its impressive canyon. Starting at 35 metres and descending to 92 metres, the canyon runs parallel to the main reef wall, offering a truly unique diving experience.
The dive begins at the southern tip of the reef, where a vibrant, colourful wall drops into the blue. A few metres along, the wall opens into a plateau at 25 metres adorned with a spectacular row of giant sea fans. Take a close look—longnose hawkfish are often found hiding delicately among the branches.
On the edge of the plateau, it’s common to spot a graceful whitetip reef shark cruising by. Schools of large tuna and barracuda frequently appear, adding excitement and energy to the dive.
Because Thomas Reef is relatively small, currents at the northern end can be strong. Divers are advised to stay close to the reef for shelter. Currents may also wrap around from the back of the reef, which can slow or even halt progress. However, when the currents are favourable, you can reach the back side of the reef, home to dramatic overhangs and schools of black-and-white snappers.
